One of one
A true one-off from the golden era of hand-built sports cars, the 1959 Asardo 1500 AR-S represents an ambitious attempt to blend European performance with American ingenuity. Built in New Jersey by Austrian engineer Helmut Schlosser, this is the only example ever produced.
Constructed on a lightweight tubular chassis with a fiberglass body, the Asardo features striking period design, highlighted by rare gullwing doors inspired by the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. Its styling pulls from the greats of the era, with proportions reminiscent of Ferrari 250 series and Maserati 300S, while incorporating a mix of carefully selected European components throughout.
Power originally came from an Alfa Romeo Giulietta-derived twin-cam four-cylinder, offering a high-revving character consistent with its lightweight construction. The car was briefly campaigned in period SCCA events before evolving later in life, including a conversion to American V8 power.
Debuted at the 1959 New York Auto Show with plans for limited production, the Asardo never progressed beyond its prototype stage due to financial constraints, leaving this example as a singular piece of automotive history.
Later in it's life it was equipped with it's original setup, a twin-cam four cylinder engine.
Today, the Asardo stands as a rare artifact of late-1950s innovation, an intersection of coachbuilt craftsmanship, racing ambition, and transatlantic design influence. A compelling addition to any serious collection, it offers both historical significance and undeniable presence.
