Mercedes-Benz Classic Center Restoration - Matching-Numbers - Gullwing
1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing
Concours-Level Restoration by Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, Irvine, CA
This matching-numbers 300SL Gullwing received a complete concours-level restoration performed by Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Irvine, California — completed in June 2020 at a documented cost of $1,114,005 USD. The work was executed to factory specification using original finishes, correct materials, and authentically sourced components. A copy of the original factory build sheet accompanies the car, confirming its numbers-matching status.
The restoration consisted of a total disassembly down to the last nut and bolt, followed by a rebuild of every mechanical and cosmetic component. During the engine overhaul, the original motor was upgraded to the desirable NSL-type high-compression sport camshaft configuration, a period-correct performance enhancement used on competition-focused 300SLs.
Additional details include:
• Fully restored belly pans
• Complete factory tool kit
• Period-correct reproduction two-piece Karl Baisch luggage set
• Door window storage bag
• Period-correct seat belts
Originally released from the Stuttgart-Untertürkheim factory on August 24, 1955, this Gullwing was shipped new to Mercedes-Benz importer Max Hoffman in New York City. The fourth owner entrusted the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center with the full restoration, resulting in a factory-correct example that retains the purity of its original specification while benefiting from tasteful, era-accurate upgrades.
With approximately 500 break-in miles completed by the Classic Center themselves, this 300 SL presents today with virtually no signs of use — representing one of the finest restoration examples of a Gullwing available anywhere.
